To discover ... Coutances Cathedral and abbeys
COUTANCES CATHEDRAL :
Along with th "Marvel" of Mont St Michel, Coutances Cathedral is a jewel of gothic art in Normandy. The current building ws constructed at the begihhing of the 13th century, re-using some of the remains dating from the 11th century.
LESSAY ABBEY (22Km from Coutances) :
The Saint Trinité Romanesque abbey from the end of the 11th century is the first Norman building entirely vaulted with ribbed vaults. The former Benedictine monastery, destroyed in 1944, has been magnificently restored by the Historic Monuments department under the direction of Yves Marie Froidevaux, chief architect.
HAMBYE ABBEY (27Km from Coutances) :
Built during the 12th and 13th centuries, it welcomed Benedictine monks until the end of the 18th century before being partially demolished after the revolution. The beauty of the classified natural site and the majestic ruins of the abbey church can also be discovered by the hiking trails around the abbey.
